Now it started its activities in 1955 under the name of ‘Eastern Laboratory’, an organ of the then PCSIR. After the independence of Bangladesh, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman issued an ordinance in 1973 to accelerate the advancement of science and technology in the country and established the BCSIR for short. The present government passed the BCSIR Act 2013 in the National Assembly in 2013 and the BCSIR governed by the present Act.
The scope of BCSIR is expanded to conduct research activities in the field of science and technology. At present 03 full regional laboratories, 08 institutes and one center have been established. Through the implementation of three ADP projects by the present government from 2009 to 2020, 05 institutes, Mining Mineralogy and Metallurgy Institute (IMMM), Nominated Reference Institute for Chemical Measurement (DRICM) and National Institute (INSI).
Innovation established. Hon’ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated IMMM on 22 January 2012 and DRICM on 10 June. Since its inception, BCSIR has been conducting research and development activities with the aim of achieving self-sufficiency in national industrial development by giving priority to applied research.
