After the merger of the Ministry of Textiles and the Ministry of Jute, a Directorate formed in 1986. However, in 1953 the then Akistan government formed the Jute Board. After the independence of Bangladesh, the Jute Board abolished in April 1973 and the Jute Department created under the Ministry of Finance. So a separate Ministry of Jute established in 1976.
