Ministry of Commerce Job Circular 2023. Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) is an autonomous state business body under the Ministry of Commerce. After independence in December 1971, Bangladesh inherited a fragmented economy, isolated communications and damaged ports. As a result, there is an urgent need to import essential commodities and industrial raw materials. Against this background, the TCB was created in 1972 by Presidential Order No. 68. Initially, it occupied all the resources, liabilities and manpower of the then Pakistan Trading Corporation. The main functions of TCB are: to import goods as required by the government; To distribute imported goods at fair prices to keep the market stable;
Creating markets abroad for traditional and non-traditional products of Bangladesh and exporting those products; Monitoring the supply and price situation of essential commodities; And to engage in trade and related activities as directed by the Government. The TCB is governed by a board consisting of a chairman (chief executive) and three directors. In 1996, the government approved a new structure with 714 manpower where the previous manpower was 1,336. It has four sections: Administration, Finance, Business and Sales / Distribution, Moving and Clearing / Forwarding and Storage.
The TCB secretary is the head of administration and the directors are the heads of other departments. TCB is headquartered in Tejgaon, Dhaka. It has regional offices in Dhaka, Chittagong, Khulna and Rajshahi and a branch office in Barisal. Due to open market policy activities since the 1990s, TCB’s sophisticated business opportunities have been greatly reduced and its manpower and number of offices have been reduced. TCB has been playing an important role in the rehabilitation and development of the country’s economy, industry and trade. In 1972-73, it imported 63 products, including cement, dairy products, textiles, yarn, sugar, corrugated iron sheets, vehicles, pig iron, oilseeds, medicines, coconut oil, tires, tubes and bicycles. TCB accounted for 24.84% of total imports that year. Under the open market policy, its imports have declined sharply and at present its share of imports has come down to only 0.3%.
Its current imports limited to salt, explosives and wood. In times of import crisis, TCB often acts as a rescuer. It imports onions, lentils, salt, dried chillies, dates, ginger and essential medicines. From July 1972 to June 1998, TCB imported goods worth Rs 19,923.7 million. The government has imported four essential commodities such as sugar, soybean oil, lentil pulses and gram.

Besides importing, TCB is also doing export business. From 1972 to 30 June 1998, TCB earned about 153.09 million rupees in foreign exchange by exporting various products.
