In 1950, after the abolition of zamindari system through the passage of the State Acquisition and Tenancy Act, the government created the Revenue Department for the collection of land revenue and proper management of land. A high level board called Board of Revenue was formed under the provincial government to assist the then revenue department. After the independence of Bangladesh, a full-fledged ministry was formed to carry out all land related functions. Commissioners at the divisional level, Collector (Deputy Commissioner) at the district level, Sub-divisional Administrators at the sub-divisional level, Circle Officers (Revenue) at the Thana level and Tehsildars at the Union level worked on land matters.

In 1975, this ministry renamed as Ministry of Law and Reforms which had two departments namely (a) Department of Law and Parliamentary Affairs. (B) Department of Land Administration and Land Reforms. But In 1986, the ministry renamed the Ministry of Land Administration, Local Government, Rural Development and Time. Now In 1986, it renamed as Ministry of Land Administration and Land Reforms. So In 1972, the ministry renamed. Ministry of Land Reforms Law and Parliamentary Affairs. In 1984, the ministry renamed the Ministry of Land Administration and Land Administration and Land Reforms.
Later on 01/03/197 it renamed as Ministry of Land – which is still in force. Functions 1. Protection of land rights and entitlements on behalf of the government; Determination and collection of land revenue and management and supervision of land administration; Management of khas land, vested and abandoned property; Preparation, preservation and publication of land survey and land design and records; Identification of internal and international borders and repair and maintenance of border pillars; Management of Sairat Mahal (Jalmahal, Balumahal, Patharmahal, Chingrimahal etc.); Activities related to land acquisition and possession; Implementation of land reform and land use policies.
