In the greater interest of providing services to the city dwellers, the government declared the Dhaka City Corporation dissolved on 23 November 2011 as per the Local Government Amendment Bill-2011. According to the law, the Dhaka City Corporation was announced to be divided into two administrative zones from December 4, 2011. As a result, Dhaka North City Corporation and Dhaka South City Corporation started their journey on February 1, 2012. Dhaka South City Corporation consists of five regions and 56 wards. According to the decision taken at the meeting of the National Implementation Committee on Administrative Restructuring (NICAR) held on May 9, 2016, the size of Dhaka South City Corporation has changed. At present the total number of wards in Dhaka South is 65. According to the Urban Planning Department, the permanent, temporary and floating population living in Dhaka South at present is about 12 million.
Barrister Sheikh Fazle Nur Taposh elected as the Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation by direct vote of the people as the nominee of Bangladesh Awami League in the City Corporation elections held on 1st February 2020. Dhaka City Corporation Career 2022
After independence in 1971, Dhaka became the capital of Bangladesh. The city area divided into 50 wards and the election of ward commissioners held in 1977 with the introduction of “Municipal Ordinance, 1977”. Ward commissioners elect one of their members as the chairman of the municipality. 1978 Dhaka Municipality gained the status of a corporation and the current chairman became the mayor of the corporation. March 1982, martial law enacted and the municipal corporation abolished. In the same year, two adjoining municipalities, Mirpur and Gulshan, merged with Dhaka Municipality. The number of wards later increased to 75 and the administrator / mayor appointed by the government till 1994. In 1990, the name of Dhaka Municipal Corporation changed to Dhaka City Corporation and it divided into 10 zones. In 1993, the government drastically amended the 1983 ordinance aimed at democratizing city corporations and rejected the municipality’s request that mayors and commissioners elected by direct election on the basis of adult suffrage. The city area divided into 90 wards, each represented by a commissioner, directly elected, forming each ward. There only 18 reserved seats for women commissioners who elected by mayors and commissioners. Corporation elections held in January 1994, and Mr. Mohammad Hanif became the first elected mayor.
